FOGO and food recovery support

NSW FOGO Requirements
The NSW Government’s Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy 2041 (WaSM) introduced new requirements to increase food and garden organics (FOGO) recovery across NSW.
Councils & Kerbside Services
Under the NSW EPA FOGO mandates, councils will be required to provide FOGO collection services to households across NSW by 1 July 2030. These reforms are designed to increase organics recovery, reduce landfill disposal and improve overall resource recovery outcomes.
Knowwaste supports councils through all stages of FOGO implementation, including:
Baseline waste audits
Kerbside contamination assessments
Bin inspection and tagging programs
Community education and engagement
Behaviour change campaigns
Ongoing monitoring and reporting

Businesses and institutions
The NSW EPA reforms also introduce new requirements for source separated food organics services across commercial premises and institutions.
Businesses and institutions will transition to source separated food organics services through a staged rollout commencing from 1 July 2026 through to 2030.
These settings can present unique operational and contamination challenges, often requiring tailored education, infrastructure and monitoring approaches.
Knowwaste supports property managers, building operators and businesses through:
FOGO readiness assessments
Waste room and bin infrastructure reviews
Contamination monitoring
Tenant education programs
Service optimisation recommendations
Ongoing performance monitoring and reporting
